A Bell councilman said Monday that he didn't know his salary was $90,000 a year less than his colleagues' nor that some city administrators made far more than that, until The Times reported that the district attorney's office was investigating why the pay was so high for the part-time positions.

Councilman Lorenzo Velez said he is being paid $8,076 a year, while his colleagues are drawing nearly $100,000 annually.

Ahead of Monday night's council meeting, Velez called for an investigation, saying that if The Times' report is true, the city manager, assistant city manager, police chief and entire council should resign.

Maywood to lay off all city employees, dismantle Police Department

The city of Maywood will lay off all city employees and begin contracting police services with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department effective July 1, officials said.

In addition to contracting with the Sheriff's Department, the Maywood City Council voted unanimously Monday night to lay off an estimated 100 employees and contract with neighboring Bell, which will handle other city services such as finance, records management, parks and recreation, street maintenance and others. Maywood will be billed about $50,833 monthly, which officials said will save $164,375 annually.

Medicare Gap May Add to State Deficits

Many states were counting on Federal Aid for their budgets, including gaps in Medicare. Governors counted on these funds - perhaps stupidly. With Congress' approval rating at an all-time low due to excessive spending on worthless bailouts, they can't actually spend more without suffering the consequences in November elections.

Of course, the article always says that they have to cut police, fire, teachers, safety net, etc, but never about their favorite pork barrel projects and cushy job perks. Not to mention excessive pensions that are bankrtupting all the states...

Having counted on Washington for money that may not be delivered, at least 30 states will have to close larger-than-anticipated shortfalls in the coming fiscal year unless Congress passes a six-month extension of increased federal spending on Medicaid.
